First BJJ Competition After ACL Surgery (Video)

My ACL surgery was on Jan 30, 2017 and my first competition since coming back was on Nov 4, 2017.

After the surgery I went back to BJJ after 4 months. But I had a lot of issues along the way.

My hamstring was hurting for a while. I kept pulling it. Now it feels better. It just took a while.

I had 4 matches – won 3, lost 1.

I am happy to be safe and healthy. Any competition experience is very good.

I will be back competing on Dec 2, 2017 at the Toronto BJJ Annual. Then I will compete Jan 13 and 17 at Grappling Industries.

Your moving great, I also tore my ACL in a competition “good fight” guy had me in a lockdown heard the ligament pop knew what it was. That was in Dec 2017. I had surgery 2weeks ago and am walking and doing a lot of PT. Thanks for the blog. keeps me positive of returning to training.

    Hi Mike
Just saw your tutorial on youtube about getting back to training after ACL surgery. Im 47 years old and been training 7 years. I also compete. I underwent ACL surgery on my left knee January 4th. Im going through the post surgery blues and wondering where my BJJ journey will go from here. Any advice will help. Thank you

    Jared

Hey Man, don’t worry about it. Make sure you strength train as soon as you can. Proper form squats and deadlifts.

I know lot’s of people who got the ACL (and other ligament) surgeries and they were all fine back training normally. It takes a while but it does get better. The surgery is very common these days. It works well. Did they use hamstring graft?

Hey man, I’m not sure. I know it was the hamstring graft. I am not sure what single or double bundle is.
